When There Is No Before: Understanding Early Childhood Trauma and Healing
When trauma, abuse, neglect, or profound relational instability occur during the earliest years of life, the impact can be different from trauma that happens later. There may be no clear “before” to return to—no fully formed sense of self that existed apart from the experience. Instead, early experiences can become woven into the developing foundation of who we are: how we understand ourselves, relationships, safety, our bodies, and the world around us. Healing from early childhood and developmental trauma may therefore involve something deeper than remembering what happened. It can mean learning to listen to implicit memories held in the body and emotions, questioning what has always felt like “just who I am,” and slowly discovering who you are when you have more freedom to choose.
